In the 21st Century there is a true renaissance in the world of architecture and a real ambition to produce buildings of our time, reflecting a growing confidence in our age.
However, while many exciting buildings of real ambition and monumental intent have been achieved, we are all too often left with blank, dehumanised, no man’s land, football pitches of dead space between them. So often they become the dumping ground for ill-considered lumps of sculpture; out-of-scale afterthoughts, which add nothing and are almost invisible.
The issue of art incorporated in architecture has currently lost its way. We have art and we have architecture, but the two are not considered as a whole, working together to give more than the sum of their parts, as they have in the past. What is needed is a far bigger ambition to produce a complete environment in which people live and work,
to produce An Identity of Place.
